Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer – Safe Cycling

Cyclists in major cities such as Ottawa and Toronto bear the serious risk of potentially fatal injuries as they share the roads with motorists. While it’s to one’s benefit to know what precautions to take when biking, the potential for accidents is always there. And if trouble strikes, you’ll need an experienced Ontario personal injury lawyer who can adequately represent you and get you the compensation you deserve. Ottawa injury lawyers at Auger Hollingsworth have successfully handled many bicycle accident cases in Ontario, have the relevant experience and are aware of the background issues that are important to cyclists.

Ottawa’s Road and Cycling Advisory Committee says that Ottawa city staff are beginning a study on cycling safety. Although committee chairman Michael Powell admits Ottawa has come improving to do in terms of improving cycling infrastructure, he believes that Ottawa is a “pretty safe” cycling city, reported CFRA.
However, according to Statistics Canada, over 260 cyclists were killed in road accidents between 2000 and 2004, about 7,500 cyclists endure serious injuries on a yearly basis and upwards of 70,000 more visit hospital emergency rooms for cycling-related injuries.

Transport Canada advises cyclists to do the following in order to stay safe:

*always wear a helmet;

*always obey the rules of the road;

*use a lights at night;

*wear bright or reflective clothing at night;

*be vigilant at both intersection and non-intersection locations, especially in urban areas; and

*never assume that motorists will yield, even if you have the right-of-way.
